Admissions - All Students

Things to Know Before You Register:

  1. Read all registration instructions carefully.

  2. If you are a new, non-exempt, student you must complete assessment and participate in an orientation session before you can register for classes. (see exemptions)

  3. Clear Holds: Outstanding holds can be viewed via MyGWC (Registration Status). You must clear all holds which block registration before you will be able to register. If a hold exists on your records, a contact number will be displayed so that you may call for specific information regarding the hold.

  4. Financial Aid Students: Contact the Financial Aid Office to be sure that your financial aid has been processed and posted to your computer records at least 5 days prior to your registration appointment.

    NOTE: Financial Aid students must pay the College Service Charge unless waived, Health Fee, Materials Fees if any, and the Parking Fee if applicable at the time of registration. Failure to pay these fees will cause your classes to be dropped. The BOGW does NOT cover these fees.

  5. Registration Restrictions: When selecting your classes from the Class Schedule, be sure to check for the following registration restrictions:

    • You may not enroll in two classes that meet at the same time or overlap in time.

    • You may not concurrently enroll in two sections of the same class.

    • You may not enroll in more than 19 units for a primary term or 9 units for the summer session.

    • You may not enroll in a class in which you received a grade of “C” or higher or “CR” unless the class is designated as repeatable as follows:
      A-B: may be taken twice
      A-C: may be taken three times
      A-D: may be taken four times

    • You may not enroll in any course in which you have received any combination of two or more D, F or NC’s. If you have previously attempted a course twice unsuccessfully, your registration in that course will be automatically blocked. [Course Repetition Policy]

  6. Prerequisite Courses: Some courses require special permission or have mandatory prerequisites. If you are planning to enroll in one of these courses you must meet one of the following:

    • Your GWC placement test results must recommend you for the class, or

    • You must have completed the prerequisite course at GWC after 1989 or be currently enrolled in it, or

    • You must have completed the prerequisite course at GWC prior to 1989 or at another college. To show proof of the prerequisite completion, bring a copy of your transcript or grade report to the Admissions Office prior to your registration appointment.

  7. Prerequisite/Corequisite Challenge
    A prerequisite/co requisite challenge requires written documentation, explanation of alternative course work, background or abilities which adequately prepare the student for the course. A Prerequisite/Co requisite Challenge Form can be obtained from the Assessment Center or Admissions and Records Office. Reasons for seeking a Prerequisite/Co requisite Challenge Form may include one or more of the following:

    • A prerequisite/corequisite is not reasonably available;
    • The student believes the prerequisite/co requisite was established in violation of regulation or in violation of the District-approved processes;

    • The student believes the prerequisite/co requisite is discriminatory or being applied in a discriminatory manner; or

    • The student has the documented knowledge or ability to succeed in the course without meeting the prerequisite/co requisite.

Upon filing the Prerequisite/Corequisite Challenge Form, the student may enroll into the Challenge Class by presenting the completed challenge form at registration. If the challenge is not upheld the student will be dropped from the class.
