2014 Science Olympiad at Santa Ana College

Dear Coaches,

On behalf of Santa Ana College (SAC), I would like to welcome you in advance to 2014 Science Olympiad competition, which will take place on Friday, February 28, 2014.  SAC is pleased to host this event, and we hope that you will enjoy our facility.

A map of the campus can be found at Busses should unload students in the guest parking lot (in front of the administration building, Building S on the college map), but please park on the southeast corner parking lot (at Bristol & Washington).  A parking pass is not needed for this day.

Registration on the day of the Science Olympiad will take place outdoors on the walkway between the Administration Building (Building S) and Russell Hall (Building R).  Signs will be posted to direct you to registration (coaches, students, and volunteers).  Events will begin promptly at 8:20 a.m.

Please remind your students to bring their school photo identification and have it with them at all times. Without an ID card, they may not be allowed to complete. ID should include grade level on the day of the competition in order to verify their identity at registration. At the time of student registration, students will be asked to show their ID before wristbands will be issued.

The cafeteria is located in the Johnson Campus Center, Building U (2nd floor) and opens from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. They serve popular items such as hamburgers, pizza, Chinese food, and so forth.  You are also welcome to bring your own food and beverages.

You may set up your "team headquarters" anywhere on campus; there will be plenty of green areas and benches for your use. Please be respectful of others who may be using the building and the facility by keeping your area clean and well-maintained. Please do not set-up in the Campus Center – this area has been reserved for an activity. The majority of the competitions will take place in or near Russell Hall (Building R). In the event that it may rain on February 28, we will provide a list of locations with shelter at the time of registration.

Registration on the website: 
Registration for Science Olympiad can be found on the Golden West College website:  (this address is case sensitive).  This website will be completely corrected by February 1.  Registration will be open from Monday, February 10 at 8:00 a.m. through Wednesday, February 19 at 4:00 p.m. No early or late registration will be accepted.
You are free to edit your registration information until the close of the registration at 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 19, 2014.  Please remember to write down your registration number and password so that you can return to edit your registration information.  Registration sheet must be submitted during the registration period.  Please avoid last-minute registrations. If you do not choose to register in advance, your selection of times will be limited. 

You must have a minimum of 10 events entered by your team.  A maximum of five 9th graders can be registered for a Division B team.

Each student may compete in a maximum of 4 events.  Disregarding this policy, upon discovery, your team will be disqualified from all events in which that student competed.

You can view the available times for the engineering events by visiting our Event Sign Up System (ESUS) site at  ESUS will be open during the same times as the registration on the GWC site, and a direct link to this site will also be available on the website. 
Instructions and your username and password will be emailed to you in advance of the registration dates.  Sign-up sheets will also be available on the door of the room where the event will be held.

Assignments for adult volunteers will be provided in advance, and we would appreciate it if you would pass those on to your volunteers. 

We regret that we cannot accommodate changes of event times.  Please structure your team so that the students can compete at the proper event time (odd or even). 

All projects for building events must have a school name written on them.  In the event that grievance and arbitration is needed, it is critical that they are left at the testing site until 2:30 p.m. After issues have been resolved, ALL projects need to be picked up and removed by 3:00 p.m. Any items left on campus or not removed by the specified time, points will be deducted from the team’s total. 

If there are any changes, an announcement will be posted on the website, and you will also be notified at check-in.  Changes in student participants made after February 19 will be accepted only if the original student is ill or if there is some other documented emergency.  The Change of Participant form is available online in case this happens, and requires 2 copies of the form: one copy to be approved at registration and the other must be brought to the competition by the student. Please list only one change on a page.

During the time between the end of the competitions and the start of the awards (roughly 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.) students will be participating in “Science Olympiad, Science Bowl”. Awards ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m. (cite on campus is yet to be determined).
